The Qatar General Organization for Standards and Metrology (QS)
The Qatar General Organization for Standards and Metrology (QS) was established under the Emiri Decree (44) for the year 2014, as a public organization with legal personality, and balancing budget attached to the Ministry of Environment. The law has identified in the fields of metrology and standards the following principal objectives to be pursued by QS;
- Adoption of a national system for standardization and metrology based on accepted international practices.
- Keeping pace with scientific and technical developments in the fields of standards, metrology, conformity assessment and laboratory accreditation.
- Ensuring the health and safety of the Qatari's citizen's and protection of the environment by making sure that goods, products and services are in compliance with the technical regulations adopted by the Organization for the purpose.
- Ensuring the quality of local goods, products and services through the adoption of appropriate Qatari Standards in order to enhance their competitiveness in the local and international markets and thus support the national economy.
Functions & Responsibilities
By law, QS is responsible in the fields of measurement, calibration and standards with the aim of fulfilling the following principal objectives:
- Issuing, approving, reviewing, amending and monitoring the implementation of standards and technical regulations with regard to all goods, products and services.
- Establishment of a national system of measurement and supervising its implementation.
- Calibration, control and supervision of measuring instruments and practices.
- Control of the quality of precious metals and jewellery through testing and stamping them.
- Granting of conformity certificates, including the Quality Mark.
- Accrediting testing and calibration laboratories and certification bodies in accordance with approved international practices.
